Congratulations to SeaChange, Inc for emerging the grand prize winner of The Liveability Challenge 2021!
In an exciting virtual showdown at The Liveability Challenge Grand Finale on 28 July 2021, six carefully chosen finalists presented their groundbreaking, innovative ideas for liveable cities in the tropics to a panel of expert judges.
SeaChange, Inc swept the grand prize of S$1 million in funding for its technology that converts dissolved CO2 in sea water into stable solid carbonates, which can be used to make construction materials such as cement and concrete.
Four more prizes of mentorships and fundraising opportunities were awarded to finalists.

By 2050, global carbon emissions must reach net zero emissions to keep temperatures within a 1.5 degree Celsius rise from pre-industrial levels. Scientists regard this as critical to prevent the worst effects of climate change. With more than 50 billion tonnes of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere annually, we need revolutionary ideas that will enable humanity to drastically reduce the production of greenhouse gas emissions and its removal at scale.
At the same time, our disposable culture has exacerbated resource scarcity, and created a pollution crisis that threatens the natural ecosystems which we need to thrive. We need a circular economy to replace the existing linear model that is hugely wasteful and pollutive. How can we find solutions which are restorative and regenerative in design?
From 15 January to 22 April 2021, The Liveability Challenge is accepting proposals with the most disruptive, game-changing ideas that will help cities accelerate decarbonisation and address its resource challenges. Finalists will compete for the grand prize of up to S$1 million in grant funding for project development by Temasek Foundation, a minimum of S$50,000 investment by Planet Rise, a S$50,000 investment by Amasia and S$50,000 investment by Silverstrand Capital.
The Liveability Challenge is also excited to announce a new partnership with Microsoft for the following editions, in providing an ecosystem for software innovations to grow to commercial viability.

The Liveability Challenge is back in its fourth edition to hunt for and accelerate the adoption of innovation solution to urban challenges of the 21st century in cities in the tropics.
From 15 January to 22 April 2021, The Liveability Challenge is accepting proposals with the most disruptive, game-changing ideas that will help cities accelerate decarbonisation and address its resource challenges (circular economy).
Finalists will get the exclusive opportunity to pitch their game-changing solutions at The Liveability Challenge Grand Finale.
The teams will have to convince some of Asia’s most sought-after investors that their innovations will not only accelerate urban transformation and deliver measurable impact for society and planet but also a rare—and profitable—business opportunity.
The best solutions will be selected by our judges to win up to S$1 million in project funding by Temasek Foundation, a minimum of S$50,000 investment by Planet Rise, a S$50,000 investment by Amasia and S$50,000 investment by Silverstrand Capital.
The Liveability Challenge is also excited to announce a new partnership with Microsoft. All finalists will also secure a spot on the Microsoft for Sustainability Innovation Programme for Startups.
In a year plagued by the global outbreak of Covid-19, the challenge received more than 400 ground-breaking entries from 60 countries in urban food production, circular packaging and decarbonisation.
On 8 July 2020, the seven most promising finalists took the virtual stage at The Liveability Challenge 2020 Grand Finale and pitched their solutions to makeSingapore sustainable and future-ready in an exciting showdown to secure up to S$1 million in grant funding and other exclusive opportunities. Some of these solutions included a plant-based milk made from Bambara groundnuts, cell- based seafood, proteins made by fermented methane, packaging film and apparel made from milk waste, and a replacement for plastic film wrap made from crustacean shells. Finalists included NamZ, Alterpacks, Shiok Meats, String Bio, TurtleTree Labs and Mi Terro.

TurtleTree Labs emerged the Grand Winner of TheLiveability Challenge 2020 and was awarded S$1 million in project funding by Temasek Foundation. Singapore-based biotechnology company, TurtleTree Labs also won a S$100,000 investment, introductions to at least 10 impact investors with mentoring, and a spot on a leading accelerator programme with Planet Rise. The innovative lab-grown milk concept avoids the climate impact and animal welfare issues the $700 billion industrial dairy industry is associated with.
Sophie’s Kitchen, a firm that makes a sustainable plant protein, is the winner of The Liveability Challenge 2019, a global search for ideas to make Southeast Asia’s cities more liveable and resilient. With the win, Temasek Foundation has awarded S$1 million to Sophie’s Kitchen to produce the protein, made with microalgae, can be used in anything from dietary supplements and cooking oil to biofuel, and will become part of a global market for alternative protein set to be worth US$16 billion by 2025.
RWDC Industries, whose proposal replaces single-use plastic straws with drinking straws made from a certified biodegradable biopolymer is the winner of The Liveability Challenge 2018 with biodegradable straws. With the win, RWDC Industries will produce biodegradable straws that would decompose under regular natural conditions into water and carbon dioxide.
